supplement with a probiotic

Probiotics are good bacteria that may help lower your risk of several cancers. Probiotics help your immune system function at its best so that it can detect and kill cells that may eventually become cancerous.  I actually just had surgery to remove these unwanted cells from my colon.  I was lucky enough to know, whereas, most people wouldn’t even think to check.  So here’s two ways in how you can prevent this from happening to you.

Change your diet or supplement with a Probiotic

My recommendation to you is to keep your gut healthy by eating a balanced diet or at the very least, supplement with a Probiotic. This will provide a healthy environment for food digestion and convert essential vitamins and nutrients into absorbable forms. For years I ate whatever I wanted and my physical appearance resembled what I ate.  Then, I found health and fitness, I changed my diet, and it changed my life for the better.  Unfortunately, I also found an issue that had started to develop in my colon and that I could of easily avoided.  I learned the hard way but I’m fortunate when others are not.  So take my advice and be pro active, not re active.

Probiotic foods

Probiotic foods contain live bacteria, which may help restore balance and protection from harmful bacteria. Eating them is one way to reinforce your gut with the good bacteria you need.

Probiotic foods include fermented vegetables or yogurt like substances:

  • Fermented milk: yogurt, kefir, sour cream, butter milk, certain cheeses
  • Fermented vegetables: sauerkraut, dill pickled cucumbers, beet kvass, many other vegetables like turnips, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, etc.
  • Fermented beans: nato, tempeh, miso
  • Fermented grains: sourdough, beer, kvass, Rejuvelac, borsh
  • Fermented fruits: wine

Eat at least one small serving of probiotic foods each day to maximize the benefits.

Apart from Probiotics, there’s also Prebiotic foods.

Prebiotic foods

Prebiotic foods feed the bacteria in your gut so that they can grow and repopulate.

Most are fiber-rich plant foods like:

  • Whole grains
  • Fruits and vegetables, specifically bananas, asparagus and onions
  • Oatmeal
  • Soy beans
  • Garlic

Your meals should be made up of mostly greens. A well balanced diet that is high in prebiotic foods can keep your gastrointestinal system healthy.

Limit processed foods

Lastly, remember to limit foods that are not grown or that are processed in factories.  These include fast food, and pre-packaged instant foods. Processed foods are low in nutrients and high in added sugar.

The bottom line

If you’re not eating enough Probiotic or Prebiotic foods, then the least you can do supplement with a Probiotic.  Both the diversity and the balance of gut bacteria are important to prevent any potential future issues.  You never know what the consequences of eating processed foods will be so protect yourself by being pro active and not only reenforcing but protecting your digestive system.
